Minimising Risk at
Phoenix Group

Managing risk effectively is essential at Phoenix. While ensuring the business meets all its regulatory obligations and operates within the Boards’ agreed risk appetite, we need to ensure that senior managers have the scope to take the necessary risks that will continue to grow our business.

In the Risk team, it’s our role to ensure there’s a robust risk management framework in place, and that it’s understood across the business, so managers can assess risk confidently when making business-critical decisions.

 

Our Risk Teams

FCA/PRA Relationship Management

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) are the two main UK organisations that regulate the way we do business. So, it’s vital that we establish a strong working relationship with them. That’s where this team comes in, acting as the Phoenix central point of contact with both the FCA and PRA and managing and monitoring all meetings, visits and communications with them.

We look at the risk management framework and challenging how the business manages risk from a financial point of view. This means ensuring that the business proactively identifies and manages risk in a controlled manner in line with risk appetite, and also independently reviewing the group’s internal risk model to ensure that the capital required for the business is calculated in an appropriate manner.

Operational Risk

The Operational Risk team is responsible for ensuring that there is a strong and positive compliance and risk culture within the Group and its Outsource Service Providers. This is achieved through the ongoing maintenance of, and the monitoring of adherence to, the Group’s Risk Management Framework, which has been designed to identify, measure, report and control operational, regulatory and financial risks across the Group and its Outsource Service Providers.

In Regulatory Risk, we assess the implementation and application of our internal regulatory risk and conduct risk framework, monitoring its effectiveness in meeting regulatory requirements through a combination of assurance and oversight activity. This involves working closely with all Phoenix business teams and our Outsource Service Providers, providing insight, guidance and advice to ensure any risk and associated accountability is understood, considered and appropriate actions taken and decisions made.
